John List House

John List House

John List House West Virginia Collection within the Carol M. Highsmith Archive, Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division
1893. 821 Main St.

This pressed brick house with stone and terracotta trim faces Main Street with a rounded, two-story bay that projects from a gabled front ell. It is similar to the Edward Hazlett House in general shape and massing but lacks a tower and stands closer to the sidewalk. As at the Edward Hazlett House, interior decorations are sumptuous. Here the cynosure is a 7-by-17-foot stained glass panel set into the second-floor ceiling of the stair hall. The panel is “lit” by clear glass skylights in the third floor. The Victorian Wheeling Landmarks Foundation owns the house and opens it to the public.
