This tiny, one-room, gable-fronted building with German siding has housed the community's post office since its establishment on March 7, 1888, as a wooden sign on the facade testifies. The level yard and parking area surrounding it were once Elkhorn's business district. Early photographs show a number of nearby one- and two-story buildings, most of which are now gone.
