In response to the city's post

World War II recovery, the Roanoke Merchants Association and the Chamber of Commerce erected on Mill Mountain a ten-thousand-pound steel star on a one-hundred-foot steel tower overlooking the city, to proclaim Roanoke the “Star City of the South.” Visible for fifteen miles on land and sixty miles from the air, its two thousand feet of neon tubing are a bright light shining on the skyline.
