Compared to its contemporary, Willow Lawn Shopping Center, this was truly in the “west lands” of Henrico County, so far west that a cactus was deemed appropriate for a logo. The sheet-metal box construction of the Westland Shopping Center sign is a rare survivor. Modern signs are built with lighter, less expensive materials—in most cases, plastics and plexiglass. The cactus sign incorporates neon lighting and is surrounded by a planting bed within a brick-walled base. Apparently the sign has received regular maintenance to keep it functional and brightly painted.
