1936–1941, Baskervill and Son. 1200 E. Broad St.

This was MCV's main hospital for decades. It faces the old Memorial Hospital across Broad Street, providing a contrast in style, planning, and height. The cruciform plan was the most modern footprint for hospitals in the 1930s, with nurses' stations in the center and wards radiating out. The straightforward Moderne styling in brick reflects its Depression-era construction. A fine metal grille depicting notable medical scientists is suspended over the Broad Street entrance. The tiny garden at the corner contributes a wonderful urban oasis to a concrete stretch of Broad Street. A marker on the lower rear wing on 12th Street commemorates the site of the building where Virginia ratified the U.S. Constitution in 1788.
