The mid-nineteenth-century phase of the Romanesque Revival, popularized by Richard Upjohn's work, lacks the weight and strength of H. H. Richardson's architecture. This is apparent in First Presbyterian Church, with its corner tower and steeple, round-arched windows, and attached wall buttresses. The congregation was established in Portsmouth in 1822, and the present church replaces one destroyed by fire in 1877.
