Grace United Methodist Church

-A A +A
1903, W. A. Caan. 4105 Junius St.

The merging of two suburban congregations established in 1868 and 1880 formed the Grace Methodist Church in 1902. The Gothic Revival scheme in tawny brick is dominated by a massive five-stage tower, stepping back with corner buttresses to a final stage with corner aediculas and a tall steeple. A loggia on the Junius Street side is terminated by a short, buttressed tower, and a similar tower on the N. Haskell Avenue elevation brackets two steep gables with traceried windows.

In striking contrast, the former Gaston Avenue Baptist Church, now Criswell College (1902, C. W. Bulger and Son) nearby at 4010 Gaston Avenue, has Ionic porticos with pediments facing both directions on its corner site and is raised on a rusticated plinth for dominating effect.
