Although the former Ben Shelton's Dry Goods and Groceries retains all its decorative brick detail, the loss of its paneled wood, plate glass, and canopy-covered storefront has diminished the building's architectural impact. The tripartite division of the facade suggests the possibility of Leffland's authorship, although it departs from his familiar three-part storefronts. The Refugio Theater (1931) by Malcolm G. Simons of San Antonio at 706 Commerce Street has suffered loss of its original sidewalk-level front, canopy, and sign. A second-story window, framed by cast-stone Spanish Baroque detail and a pair of cast-stone quatrefoils are the surviving remnants of Simons's design.
