The house reveals the arrival of the Border Brick style to Laredo. The original sandstone building was later superimposed with a molded brick cornice with partial pilasters. Other c. 1900 additions converted the structure into an L-plan dwelling, including a gabled kitchen wing. The house was a wedding gift for Natividad Herrera, who married a Benavides and also served in the Confederate Army, as did most male members of Laredo's colonial elite.
