Built on the site of the client's previous house, this walled compound of concrete masonry units occupies one of the River Oaks lots that face busy Westheimer Road. Carrie Glassman Shoemake and Ernesto Maldonado adjusted the house to its site, protecting it from visual and acoustical exposure but ensuring that it would have a strong architectural presence on the street. They treated the former yards as a sequence of walled courtyards and used a breezeway through the center of the house to divide the living quarters of one generation of the family from that of another. McDugald-Steele were the landscape architects.
