The former Galveston News Building, housing the offices and production plant of the most influential daily newspaper published in Texas in the 1870s and 1880s, is a Clayton masterpiece. From the mid-1960s until the mid-1990s, the facade was covered with plaster panels; its disclosure, even in an altered condition, still seems like a minor miracle. Clayton employed panelized brick in contrasting tones of deep red and buff, incorporating shallow projection and recession. His ability to compress so much drama into the street front of a commercial building is engaging not just visually but viscerally, one of the attributes that makes his buildings so powerful.
