El Jardin Hotel

El Jardin Hotel

El Jardin Hotel The Lyda Hill Texas Collection of Photographs in Carol M. Highsmith's America Project, Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division
1926, Kelwood Company. 1100 E. Levee St.

The hotel reflects 1920s commercial redevelopment and the introduction of the Spanish Mediterranean style into downtown. The eight-story, 150-room hotel was part of a multiblock complex that included the Chamber of Commerce and the Missouri Pacific Railroad Station. Opposite, at 1101 E. Levee Street, the Capitol Theater of 1928 by Henry T. Phelps was also part of the modernizing effort, with its arched openings and curvilinear red-tiled parapet designed to blend with its neighbors.
