1926, José Colunga, builder. 451 E. Adams St.

This central-hall-plan house, with brick parapets, porch with Corinthian capitals, and arched windows, evokes a style found in affluent suburbs of Mexican and Caribbean cities, as opposed to those of the United States. The fact that it was built by a former Matamoros public official reveals the fluidity of the border region, as well as a concerted attempt by established Hispanic families to maintain their cultural identity through their architecture.
