Providence College was established in 1917 by the Dominican order of friars at the invitation of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Providence. At the end of an axis diagonal to the intersection of the two streets is the original building in Collegiate Gothic, Bishop Harkins Hall (1919, Matthew Sullivan). Of most interest on the campus are two houses, survivors from Mount Pleasant's nineteenth-century country estates, both now used as academic buildings.
