“An imposing pile”: so contemporary descriptions might have characterized this tall, spreading, hip-roofed mass of quarry-faced masonry with its miscellany of gables and stubby turrets. Windows are rather spottily located, with a giant wheel window stealing most attention. It
is a very belated Richardsonian Romanesque design by a prominent late-nineteenth-century local builder who eventually combined this trade with architectural design.
