The building type which seems to be most entwined with the churches of this rural town is the one-room schoolhouse of the simplest sort with paired doors flanking a centered window in its gabled entrance elevation. The Mt. Hygeia Shoolhouse continued in use until the completion of school consolidation in Foster in 1952. It was the last one-room schoolhouse to close in the town and, as this is written, the only one to have escaped renovation, although it is neglected.
