Just south of Division Street two public buildings almost opposite one another make an auspicious entry into the northern end of Main Street. The Varnum Memorial Armory exploits the typical battlemented type to achieve a degree of monumentality that is remarkable here, in what is for armories a tiny building. The wide, shallow buttressing on the facade and battlemented rooflines are particularly effective. The asymmetry created by the height and the staggered windows of the stair tower effectively anchors the corner of the building at Division Street. Built by the Varnum Continentals, a filiopietistic military organization founded in 1907, the armory houses the organization's headquarters, a drill hall, and a military museum.
