The remnants of Juniata Furnace, the first ironworks in Perry County, are preserved in Little Buffalo State Park. The single charcoalburning furnace on Limestone Run near Little Buffalo Creek, Juniata Iron Works (1810–1848) engendered a village consisting of the ironmaster's house, eleven tenant houses, church, tavern, store, forge, blacksmith's shop, gristmill, and sawmill. In 1890, the narrow-gauge Newport and Sherman's Valley Railroad passed through Juniata Furnace moving timber and freight between Newport and New Germantown. Today, the ironworks and many other buildings have vanished, but Blue Ball Tavern (PE3), Shoaff's Mill (PE4), the Superintendent's house (PE5), two springhouses, the ironworkers' cemetery, a narrow-gauge railway right-of-way (now a hiking trail), and Clay's Covered Bridge (PE6) give the public a rare glimpse of life in a nineteenth-century industrial village.
