This is one of just two survivors of the dozen market houses that once served Pittsburgh; the other is in the South Side (see AL48). Its circular dome of metal, timber, and glass rises above a block of light and dark yellow bricks, colored terra-cotta, and geometric ornament, while enormous round-arched windows in gabled wall dormers on all four elevations illuminate the interior. It ceased functioning as a market in 1916, and, since then, has been used for various purposes, including an exhibition space.
