The variety of architectural experiences a pedestrian might get from an inspection of Woodland Road is nowhere more pronounced than in the two postmodern residences standing at numbers 118 and 118-A (AL113). Richard Meier's Giovannitti House stands directly next to the roadway, with the Abrams House right behind. Meier's much-acclaimed design is, at first glance, a barely concealed reshuffling of his Smith House at Darien, Connecticut, of a dozen years before. Though keeping the Smith House's language of intersecting planes, solids, and voids, the Giovannitti three-story, neo-Corbusian white cube takes on extraordinary vividness as it tucks itself into the hillside. This affords privacy and a garden setting to the residents within the house, and a reconsideration of the relationship between man and nature to the streetside viewer.
