Westminster Presbyterian is one of two historic Devils Lake churches with Akron plans; the nearby United Methodist Church (1916; 601 5th Street NE) is the other. Enthusiasm for the Akron plan extended rapidly from its midwestern beginning to growing progressive communities on the North Dakota prairie, where Protestant congregational leaders aspired to a new way of delivering the gospel. This red brick church has a broad square tower with a crenellated parapet in the reentrant angle of the gabled fronts. This Romanesque Revival church along with the classically influenced United Methodist Church and the nearby Gothic Revival Episcopal Church of the Advent (1886; 510 6th Street NE) form an interesting stylistic dialogue.
