On a site formerly occupied by the huge 1889–1891 brick and sandstone federal customhouse, courthouse, and post office is this Modernistic post office. Fluted pilasters divide the Bedford limestone facade of the monolithic building into seven bays. Approached by a short flight of stairs, the central entrance is surrounded by Kasota stone and surmounted by a carved eagle. The lobby contains a Works Progress Administration (WPA)–sponsored mural, Marquette Exploring Shores of Lake Superior, painted by Dewey Albinson.
