Overlooking Evans Lake in the Irish Hills, the Davenport Hotel is a rare surviving inn that sheltered travelers on the Chicago Road. Its two-story porch is characteristic of the inns of southern Michigan referred to by Talbot Hamlin (see LE14). The hotel stands on the site of a log tavern built in the 1830s by Henry W. Sisson. The present building was constructed for John Davenport, probably in the 1850s, and operated as an inn until 1864, when Davenport sold it to Henry Lancaster. The hipped-roof, two-story, wood-frame inn is fronted with a full-height double porch articulated by Doric piers. Although the exterior now is sided in aluminum, the interior remains intact. The current owner is rehabilitating the inn to hold offices and apartments.
