The multi-use office, retail, hotel, conference, and convention center is placed on a diagonal in order to link, in accordance with the city's earlier plans, Bronson Park with the Kalamazoo Mall. Inland Steel Development Corporation and the city collaborated in its development, which was intended to promote downtown redevelopment. A steel and glass skin covers the three-, six-, and ten-story concrete frames. It was designed by a group of architects who met at Harvard's Graduate School of Design and who had worked for Victor Gruen or The Architects Collaborative. The center was scaled appropriately to the conditions of a small city. The Upjohn Company, its past owner, refurbished it to serve as an important neighbor to the Arcadia Creek redevelopment project.
