In addition to founding Phillips Packing Co. in 1902, the Phillips brothers and W. Grason Winterbottom established Phillips Hardware Company in 1904. Their first store on Race St. was destroyed by the 1910 downtown fire, but they immediately rebuilt on several nearby parcels, including one owned by Brown, a local architect and builder. He designed their new three-story building with a two-tone brick facade, pressed metal cornices, and leaded glass transoms over the store windows with the initials PHC. In addition to retail space, both the hardware and packing company office space was in this building. Phillips Hardware is still a noteworthy commercial landmark dominating the corner of Race and Muir streets.
