Editor of the Architectural Review from 1907 to 1919, Frank Chouteau Brown also published Modern English Country Houses (1923) to popularize a vision he promoted in his own practice, as represented by this Winchester house. Its tall front chimney, brick walls enlivened by diamond patterns of burnt brick, and casement windows all relate to features of contemporary English country houses. The iron of Snug Gables's entrance gate and the colored tiles embedded in the enclosing brick wall reflect the Arts and Crafts details favored by many Boston architects at this time.
