Paul Rudolph converted an old automobile garage built in the early 1900s and set in the center of a residential block into a single-family home in 1960 by removing the concrete block facade and remodeling the open space into living quarters. Inspired by traditional Roman architecture, the plan provides a central living room surrounded on three sides by four bedrooms, a study, a small bathroom, a kitchen, and, along the back wall, a greenhouse. Partially glazed walls and a raised ceiling supported on exposed steel trusses provide generous headroom and natural light. A high lattice screen fronted by a paved courtyard provides the formal entrance into the residence.
