The finest surviving nineteenth-century industrial building in Northwest Cambridge, the Henderson Carriage Factory at first over-shadowed its surrounding neighborhood. The Henderson Brothers had built a more modest brick factory here in 1869 that was destroyed by fire in 1892. In the replacement, Boston architect Charles E. Park used standard fireproof mill construction. Beyond the nine recessed bays of the Massachusetts Avenue elevation, he endowed the five-story block with public dignity, using a corner entrance surmounted by a steepled tower, which has since been removed.
