At the intersection of Brookline and Longwood avenues, the Carl J. Shapiro Center organizes the previously dispersed ambulatory services of Beth Israel-Deaconess Hospital into a single structure. The historic four-story brown brick and cast-stone Medieval Revival building with inset reproductions of classical sculpture for the Massachusetts College of Art, now located nearby at 621 Huntington Avenue, was incorporated into the new twelve-story complex. Three facades and sections of the interiors of the 1929 building have been preserved. Specialists in health care and biomedical research facilities, Rothman Partners chose a buff brick for the expansion that negotiates between the materials of the historic structure for Massachusetts Art and the less distinguished tan brick buildings for the earlier Beth-Israel campus along Brookline Avenue. Above a 750-car parking garage, the Carl J. Shapiro Center provides space for education, health care, and research.
