UBS Building (Paine Webber Building)

1984, Goody, Clancy and Associates. 265 Franklin St.

Distinguished by fine materials, the building contrasts rough-hewn granite on the lower stories with set back polished rose granite on the upper levels. This subtle relief effect, combined with a simple unadorned rectilinear window pattern, adds to the overall handsome exterior. Considering the relative simplicity of the facade, the six-story interior lobby, partially illuminated by a stepped skylight, provides an interior surprise. It features a bar and lounge on the Franklin Street entrance side, an information center at the High Street entrance, and encircling fountains and water channels amid office greenery and marble panels—more reminiscent of a hotel lobby.
