This thirty-four-story tower occupies the site of an inn where George Washington stayed in October 1789. It is distinguished by its skyline logo and its pre-cast-concrete window frames, providing a uniform rhythm throughout. The whole rises from a cantilevered base and is marked by a certain monotony, despite attempts to relate the building to its surroundings. The State Street Bank was one of the first institutions to stimulate reinvestment in downtown when it built this new headquarters in 1966.
