The pioneer telephone exchange, post office, and offices of doctors, lawyers, and mine owners lay behind the heavy plate glass windows. With a three-ton fireproof and burglar-proof Herring safe, this stronghold of capital attracted miners who lined up to sell dust to gold buyers.
