National League of Cities Building

1982, Frank Schlesinger. 1301 Pennsylvania Ave. NW

Named for its most prominent tenant, this twelve-story building was designed in concert with National Place. Its face of slightly tinted glass recedes behind precast concrete panels and sun screens. The south facade presents a formal aspect to Pennsylvania Avenue, with a wide vertical niche admitting light to windows on the full height of the atrium adjacent to the elevator. On the more exuberant 13th Street facade, notches are carved out and setbacks create an interesting checkerboard effect. The modulation of the east side creates light wells for the offices and offers street views.
