John A. Lett, an Irish immigrant, built this two-story clapboard hotel solid enough to withstand a tornado that blew it off its foundation a month after it opened. The white paint, hipped roof, and large, wrapping porch with Tuscan columns were common in hotels of eastern Colorado's small prairie towns. This one boasted the area's first steam heat and hot and cold running water.
