1982. West end of Rendezvous Way, 1.5 miles south of Crestone

The Carmelites' peeled log chapel and monastery, sited on a sandy sagebrush swell, are joined by an elevated, buttressed footbridge. In a contemporary interpretation of a walled Norman enclave, polygonal roofs atop square and round elements are joined by tan stucco walls. The earth-sheltered chapel, which has a dramatic pyramidal tower over the corner altar, is illuminated by stained glass panels depicting the monastic life. Spread about the hillside are passive solar hermitages with wooden or stucco walls, some earth sheltered and earth roofed.
