This once grand turn-of-the-century amusement park is the centerpiece of the one-square-mile town of Lakeside, which has thirteen residents, a shopping center, and a 37-acre lake. The amusement park wraps around Lake Rhoda, which Lakeside founder Ben Karsner named for his daughter, the current owner. The park's lavish 150-foot Tower of Jewels, lit with 16,000 light bulbs, is a square campanile with Venetian and Moorish overtones. It retains some of its original Victorian decor, as well as the 1940s Streamline Moderne redesign by Richard Crowther. Fresh from working on San Francisco's Golden Gate Exposition, Crowther added modern lines, colors, and sparkle to the aging park. Edward Vettel of the famed family of roller coaster engineers designed the Cyclone Roller Coaster (1940). Queasy visitors prefer the 22-inch-gauge train that has been carrying visitors around the lake since 1908.
