Designed by Shreveport’s prominent modernist architects for their physician cousin, also named William B. Wiener, and his wife, Carolyn, this one-story T-plan house turns its back on the street to create a private world for its family. A blank buff brick wall contrasts with the void created by the prominent carport and its supporting lally columns, where a gingko tree grows through a hole in the roof beside a hidden entrance. The kitchen connects public and private wings to form a T-shaped floor plan. The front living room flows into the dining room, while a full window wall shaded by a deep eave unifies both spaces and brings the private courtyard into the house. A 1957 addition provided more bedrooms for the growing family.

Samuel G. Wiener designed another house (1959) for cousins, Julian and Kathryn Wiener, at 3858 Redbud Road in the Eastover neighborhood. The one-story, red brick residence’s rooms are organized around a central glazed atrium. A colorful plexiglass screen (Sam G. Wiener Jr.) highlights rather than hides the entrance.
