Streetcar tracks passed through the square from 1877 until 1946 in line with Abercorn Street. The three-tiered, cast-iron Semiquincentenary Fountain in the center, produced by the Robinson Iron Company in Alexander City, Alabama, was erected in 1982–1983 by the Colonial Dames of America to commemorate the 250th anniversary of founding of the colony.
