Although the 1885 prospectus for the suburb of Montclair (see DV151) shows a tree-lined parkway with a generous median strip where 6th Avenue is today, this parkway was developed relatively late, without sidewalks and with residential fences intruding on 30-foot-deep, city-owned planting strips. The original canopy of elms is being replaced with honey locusts and other trees. The 88-foot median contains an Olmstedian plant palette, with mass shrub plantings alternating with specimen evergreen trees. Most parkway residences were built after 1910, providing a smorgasbord of twentieth-century styles.
