Named for African American teacher and Civil War veteran Henry H. Butler, this U.S. Housing Authority–sponsored public housing community sits on a site once known as Chambers Hill in what, in the 1930s, was deemed the worst slum in Fort Worth. Two-story gabled brick apartment blocks are disposed carefully on the hilly site. Each building has flat-roofed concrete entrance canopies. These economical structures possess a timeless quality that dignifies their history as low-income public housing.
