One of a series of federal lighthouses erected around Lake Pontchartrain from the Rigolets to Madisonville, this 56-foot-high, hourglass-shaped brick tower was stranded inland when the Orleans Levee Board completed the landfill project along the lakeshore in 1929. A concrete levee wall now forms a backdrop to the lighthouse. It was named for Milneburg, the former lakefront resort at this location, which was developed by Scotsman Andrew Milne in 1831. Near the lighthouse are buildings housing the Navy Information Technology Center (1999) in the Research and Technology Park of the University of New Orleans, designed by Perez Ernst Farnet, Architects and Planners.
