The odd-shaped belfry and tower date the company—as the inscription indicates—to 1774; George Washington was a member. Constructed in 1855 after the first firehouse, on Royal Street at Market Square, burned, the building was altered in 1871 when the belfry was replaced and a pressed brick front was erected. The cornice and cast iron lintels may date from the 1855 structure; the pilaster capitals flanking the entrance bear a remote resemblance to those of the Tower of the Winds in Athens.
