About the only “roadside delight” in Charlottesville, this Monticello rip-off was a totally serious design by Makielski, who was trying to modernize Jefferson. When built, this and the adjacent Town and Country Motel (1956, Stanislaw Makielski), 1344 Richmond Road, were upscale tourist destinations. The restaurant dates from the days when Albemarle County was dry; a “bottle club” was located in the basement. Since then, this area, known as Pan Tops Mountain, has changed considerably, and the building's life is probably limited.
