Morgan County, formed in 1820 from Berkeley and Hampshire counties, was named for Revolutionary War hero Daniel Morgan. Westernmost of the three Eastern Panhandle counties, it has a far more rugged landscape than Jefferson and Berkeley. Until 1980, the census count never exceeded 10,000. The 2000 population of 14,943 is the highest yet attained.
