Built as the county courthouse during Calvert's brief tenure as county seat, the two-story brick castellated building with octagonal tower rests on a limestone plinth with its many chimneys forming corner turrets. The original jail and stable buildings still sit behind. Before the courthouse could be put into use, however, the county seat was moved to Franklin. Robert A. Brown, merchant and planter, bought the structure and converted it to a residence in 1885. In 1909 it was sold to Mrs. Fannie L. Hammond, whose family lived there until 1966. The house is now a bed-and-breakfast operated by Hammond's great-grandson.
