At the opposite end of the block on which the Arquitectonica row houses (
HN7) were constructed, Houston architect Stern built a three-story house that attempts to learn from Houston. Its low-pitched roof with exposed rafter tails pays homage to the bungalow house type. The stepped-plan configuration reflects Stern's admiration for the environmentally responsive planning of Houston architect John F. Staub. The gray-painted cypress clapboards and the south-facing sunscreens reflect Piano's Menil Collection (
HN7), while the interior spatial
organization with its sectionally interlocked double-height spaces was inspired by the town houses of 1972 by Howard Barnstone around the corner at 4923–4927 Graustark Street.
