The church represents the relocation of a parish from the older central core of the city. The California Mission–styled complex, by architects from West Palm Beach, Florida, likely under the influence of architect Addison Mizner, is roofed in red clay tile, surfaced in stucco, and arranged around a central courtyard.

Nearby, the First Presbyterian Church (1930), at 435 S. Upper Broadway, is another mainstream design by Wyatt C. Hedrick executed in the Gothic vocabulary after the congregation moved from the commercialized northern segment of the bluff.
