According to Manufacturers Record, the contract fee for this two-story building was $11,900, an amount that did not buy much, even in 1894. The two-story building, standing on a high basement, is among the state's most modest county courthouses. Its rugged, quarry-faced sandstone walls, laid in regular courses, contrast with elementary classical details. The middle bay of the three-bay facade terminates in a semitower covered with a pyramidal roof that barely rises above the hipped roof of the building behind it. A large stone jail, fronted by a sheriff's residence and office, extends to the north as a side wing.
