This wonderfully sophisticated, virtually pristine Art Deco women's dress and gift shop has a onestory facade veneered with Indiana limestone. The facade is divided into three parts—two large plate glass show windows flanking a recessed entrance—separated by fluted pilasters topped with stylized urns. Above the cornice, with its wavelike decorations, a central parapet contains the single word Aldersons in relief. Inside, original fittings supplied by the Georgia Show Case Company (of Montgomery, Alabama) remain. Of solid walnut with inset pewter decorations, they include counters, shelves, dress racks, and mirrored millinery tables. Members of the Alderson family, who have published a brochure on their “shopping and architectural delight,” still own and operate the store. The building is a gem of a type that has virtually disappeared from America's commercial scene.
