Inordinately tall windows, bracketed cornices, fish-scale shingles, an angular bay at one corner, and a wraparound porch all contribute to the Victorian-period flavor of this large, rambling frame house. In spite of occasional protrusions, a basic rectangular form prevails, and in spite of all the trim, the house owes as much stylistic debt to the then-emerging Colonial Revival as to the then-receding Queen Anne style. This was the home of William Nelson Page, who, as manager, then president, of the area's largest coal company, was instrumental in the early development of Fayette County's New River Coal Field. He was the first president of the Virginian Railway, which helped open additional West Virginia coalfields early in the twentieth century.
